Steinway & Sons manufactures upright and grand pianos in two factories — one in Germany and one in New York City. The company distinguishes between models by their length and, for upright Steinway pianos, by height. European model numbers refer to these measurements in centimeters:
Grand pianos: S-155, M-170, O-180, A-188, B-211, C-227 and D-274
Upright pianos: V-125 and K-132
American grands, on the other hand, list their dimensions in feet and inches: S (5 feet 1 inch), M (5 feet 7 inches), O (5 feet 10 3⁄4 inches), A (6 feet 2 inches), B (6 feet 10 1⁄2 inches) and D (8 feet 11 3⁄4 inches)
The company also manufactures three uprights in its New York factory: 4510 (45 inches), 1098 (46 1/2 inches) and K-52 (52 inches)
